Website vs App

All of our customers want to be relevant to the expanding market of mobile devices. A lot of people ask us: "Do I need an app?" These days everything is going mobile. Mobile Apps, mobile friendly websites and web apps. How do you make heads or tails of it all? What do you need to reach your audience? Is a mobile friendly website enough?

A few times when Apps have been rejected from the iOS App store, we have gotten a couple revealing reasons for that rejection. We can state those reasons as a couple questions:

  1. What compelling content or user experience will the mobile app provide that a mobile friendly website couldn't?
  2. What is the ongoing entertainment value that the App will provide? Why will they keep coming back to it time and again?

The answer to these questions can reveal the necessity of an App. If your App idea provides a user experience, content, or a tool that could not be easily gotten from your website, then you've got something. If you just know that the feature idea you have in your head is something people would find really useful and fun, then you've got something.

Many times you want a feature because you would find it useful. This is actually a good indicator: if you find it useful, others probably will, too. On the other hand, if you're looking to put the content of your website in a mobile format, a mobile friendly website is probably the better and cheaper way to go.

Some Questions to Help You Refine Your Idea

  2. What is the measure of your Apps success?
  3. What platforms do you want to support?
  4. What is your budget?
  5. What is your timeframe?

  7. What is the ongoing entertainment value that the App will provide? Why will they keep coming back to it time and again?
